Nanotechnologies: Where should they take us? Have your say

NanOpinion Turkish high school - part 1

NanOpinion Turkish high school - part 1

Mon, 2 Dec 2013

As a part of the NanOpinion project, Uskudar American Academy Grade 10 students performed nanoscience activities in their chemistry class. In unit 1: Periodic trends and properties of metals and nonmetals, students discussed the change within the properties of matter when the size changes and the differences between nanotechnology and microtechnology. Then in the computer lab, students signed in to the moodle course: smart surfaces and discussed about material engineering and how to manipulate materials using nanotechnology according to our need. They enjoyed the videos and animations but at most they loved the idea of recieving certificates after completing each section.

In the second part of the same unit, students performed colorimetric gold nanosensor experiment to discuss about an application of nanotechnology. During the experiment they had a chance to review some of the concepts they have learnt in grade 9 year such as colloids, type of mixtures and aggregation. They also had a chance to learn new concepts like the difference between bulk and nano sizes, applications of nano sized gold, genetic screening, and advantages of using nanosensors. Especially some of the students who are considering medicine as a major in the future were very enthusiastic and interested during the experiment. Generally all of the students enjoyed to see the color changes occuring in the mixture through aggregation process and scattering of light beam while it is passing from colloidal mixtures.

About nanopinion

  • nanopinion is an EC-funded project bringing together 17 partners from 11 countries with the aim of monitoring public opinion on what we hope from innovation with nanotechnologies. The project is aimed citizens with a special focus on hard-to-reach target groups, which are people who do not normally encounter and give their opinion nanotechnologies at first hand.
  • Dialogue is facilitated online and in outreach events in 30 countries presenting different participatory formats.
  • To promote an informed debate, we also run a strong press & social media campaign and offer a repository with more than 150 resources.
