Virtual Experiment on STM: Can you make your mobile smaller?
Here you will find a virtual experiment where you will be able to enter in a laboratory and virtually perform current research in the field of transistors. They are widely used in our daily life for electronic devices such as mobile phones, radios, TVs, computers...
The experiment also offers information on how do present-day transistors work and shows molecular transistors as an approach to make them smaller. This line of reasearch is based on substituting silicon by a single molecule that could be reduced or oxidized, gaining or loosing electrons. Students will also learn how a Scanning Tunneling Microscope works and will be able to work with it in a lab and make their own molecular transistor, in the same manner nanotechnologists do in their labs.
This resource is not only aimed at giving students the opportunity to know about this topic, but also to offer them the possibility to imagine how it is like working in a laboratory and to decrease the gap between research and education. We believe this is an important goal to make sure that we educate citizens within a knowledge based society, and it is critical in the new framework programme of the European Commission called Horizon 2020, where all research projects will be encouraged to promote what they called Responsible Research and Innovation. Within these projects, it is highly recommended to explore programmes of collaboration between the education and the scientific community.
